Podiums at Bathurst are worth fighting for and Jason Bright put up a mighty defence of third place at The Mountain today but was ultimately undone with five laps to go.
After completing his compulsory laps Team BOC co-driver Andrew Jones handed the car to Bright in a strong top ten position. Bright powered through a triple stint and was running a strong third as the final stint began.
He held off Craig Lowndes and Garth Tander for more than 15 laps of dramatic racing before Tander made a lunge forcing them both wide. Lowndes went through to finish third with Tander fourth and Bright fifth.
V8 Supercars will be back in action at the Gold Coast in two weeks time.
"We had a quick car but our last pit stop was a lap earlier than Whincup in second, two laps earlier than Frosty in the lead and five laps earlier than Tander and Lowndes behind me so we just didn't have the tyres at the end. We latched onto the leaders but weren't going to be able to hang on.
"We had got strengths onto the straights and excellent braking so no one could get us. Tander just had a lunge and took us with him off the track. He cost himself a position and me two. There was no way he was going to get us without making a mistake like that.
"Lowndes was behind me that previous stint and I was able to hold him off and pull away before pitting. With fresh tyres I knew it was going to be harder but we held him off and I think we had his measure enough that he wasn't going to be able to pass us. I felt like Tander was getting weaker all the time. His braking is nowhere near as good as ours and he stuffed it up.
"When we got to the last seven laps I was getting more confident that we would be able to hold them off unless someone did something stupid, which proved to be the case."
Team BOC Co-Driver
"Brighty did an incredible job I reckon. I take my hat off to him. He fought very, very hard. To be able to hang onto the others, stave off the challenges from Lowndes then Tander; even with five laps to go it was going to be hard so massive respect for putting up the fight. Often you see people roll over and you definitely didn't see him do that!
"Our car was pretty average to start the day. The tuning the engineers did throughout the day made the car so much better. Those guys don't get enough credit."
