Qualifying (Race 12)
Position: 24th – 1:06.9344 / Pole Position: Shane Van Gisbergen – 1:06.0923
Race 12 – 120km
Position: 12th / Winner: Michael Caruso
Conditions were hot again at Hidden Valley today, and for qualifying the clouds came over the circuit for just a moment. Some drivers opted to put green tyres on at the start of the session and get their flying lap in early. The ones that did were the winners in qualifying today, with the heat proving to be too much in the latter part of the session. After starting in an unusual 24th position, the task ahead was going to be tough. After some lap one dramas involving a few of the front running cars, Jason was able to move forward a couple of positions. Add to that good car pace and he was quickly moving through the field. It was a late race yet quick pit stop for tyres only today, and Jason held his position until the end, finishing in 12th.
JASON: “I said to my engineer Paul before the race that we needed to finish better than 13th and that we needed to have a go at a strategy that was going to allow us to jump forward like that. Our pace really helped to get us there along with getting past a couple of cars due to the first lap carnage. The pace of the car was really good and I managed to catch Lowndes but wasn’t able to pass him. Considering where we started, the end result is pretty satisfying.”
